Mama v Dadda

There is a competition going on between Map Guy and I, and although he will protest that he knows nothing about it, I know that secretly, he’s been competing all along.

It’s a competition that I’m sure goes on between many couples of young children… and whoever wins will get life-long kudos.

This competition I speak of, when so many others dare not, is to see whose name the child says first.

Will it be Mama? Or will it be Dadda?

It's like Battle of the Sexes but with baby spew.

Now us Mamas are at a slight disadvantage since we’re normally the primary carers and talk non-stop about Dadda all day.

“Dadda will be home soon”

“We’ll get Dadda to fix it”

“It’s OK, Dadda’s gonna bring Mama some wine”

And so on.

See that? That’s a 3:1 advantage they’ve got going on in my highly scientific survey.

I have heard Map Guy evening the odds (and I may or may not have done this too) when he talks to Tricky and says “Mum Mum Mum Mum Mum Mum, bub bub bub bub bub bub bub, Dad Dad Dad Dad Dad Dad Dad” while pointing to the corresponding person.

So yesterday, at 7 months, 1 week and 2 days (not that I’m counting) Tricky said “Mum Mum Mum Mum Mum” all afternoon! I WIN! I got it on video too, because he’s a first born and that’s just what you do.

It remains to be seen whether he keeps saying it tomorrow or if he forgets by the time he wakes up. But it doesn’t matter – It will go down in history (or maybe just his baby book) that his first word was Mum.

Who won in your family?

  1. I actually can't remember with my first two. Though Bubba says DaDee, he calls me daddy as well, except when Bubba gets in trouble from DP he cries "Mummmahhh!"

THough I say let them learn Daddy first, that way when the kid is screaming out at night they'll be callinig for "Daadddddyyyyyy!!!" instead of Mummy. "Well, Dear, he's calling for you not me" heh heh heh

  2. Neither of us won with our first baby - his first word was "baby". His second word was Dadda, followed about a week later by Mama.

  3. Hahahahaha

We had the same battle in our house

We're breaking even at the moment, need to have another baby to balance it out ;)

  4. We are waiting for our little guy to say his first words. I want him to say Dad first. That way when he does I can tell hubby 'oh the baby needs you ;)' hahaha not sure how successful that'll be

  5. My little fella said " dadadadaddad " on a friday and then come out with " mumumumum " on the sunday...which was Fathers Day! So his first two words were only split by one day...i think that makes us winners all round!

  6. Even now (@ 4 & 5) the day is filled with the echo of Mum. Mum. Mum. Congratulations.

  7. Ohhh yay! Love that first word, especially when it's mum ;)
I think we're even, Ellie said Mum first and Kahlei was a Dad. So, I need to start encouraging Jasper so that I win overall!

  8. New follower here :)))I love your cute little blog.
Uhmm we do compete here too lol I won with my first DD (w couldn't confirm 100% though as she didn't say it again for a while. Next work was Dadda hmm maybe a tie?) working on 2nd DD. I hope I win this one lol

  9. Oh god, I was SO relieved when my son said Mum first - after so many months of hearing my MIL & everyone else in my hubby's family banging on about how much he looked like his Dad - I just wanted ONE win!
My daughter said Dad first, and that was okay - because everyone knows that it's the first word spoken by the firstborn that matters! LOL

  10. I was devastated with Farmboys first words. We had "Dada" first and then "broom broom" before "Mumma".... I was edged out by a car noise.

  11. I felt exactly the same Fiona, Tricky gets called 'Little Map Guy' by my in-laws because he looks identical, I needed the win for a morale boost!

  12. I won two to one! My first child said Dad-dad! And the next two said Mum-mum! I believe after all us mums go through, we should get to be the first, LOL

  13. I hope to god i win this one. I am not a competitive person but i want to win this one!

  14. hehehe mum mum mum mum mum
