Hullo Eurovision!

Hullo Europe! Don't yew look bewdiful this evaning!

Have no idea what I'm going on about? Last night was the 2011 Eurovision Song Contest.

I love everything about Eurovision. Tacky costumes, mostly crappy songs, and gimmicky acts - what's not to love? This year didn't disappoint, there were giant pointy hats (Devo on steroids?), dresses so short they were belts, bizarre back up dancers and a fairy playing a clarinet whilst riding a unicycle. I say again, what's not to love?

Because of the time difference the result was actually known by the time we woke up yesterday so there was a self imposed media black out - in past years they've announced it on news websites as "Germany wins Eurovision" which has pissed me off so much. Is it that hard to say "Eurovision Winner" and let someone click through to know the result? Huh? No. You just had to go and spoil it didn't you.

It's tradition for Map Guy and I get together with a group of friends to watch the show in all it's gaudy costume and wind machine glory. But you can't just watch the show, you have to dress up and support one of the countries in the final.

Which is why a bunch of very strange looking people turned up at Casa de Glow:

Mr Moldova (camera and internet shy)

Mrs Ireland and Baby Ireland (with spikey Jedward hair!)

Mrs Germany and Mr Russia

Mr Ukraine
Baby Germany and Mrs Switzerland
Yes, even babies dress up for our Eurovision parties! I made Tricky's lederhosen using GIMP and iron on transfer paper - it's the most creative thing I've ever done, the detailing in the middle is actually our family crest. So I get top points for my efforts and then lose them all because he was in bed asleep before anyone arrived.

So who won? There was a big upset and Azebaijan took the title with their soppy love song and 'get a room' face touching. Hey, at least it wasn't Jedward.

Do you watch Eurovision like 400 million others worldwide? Do you dress up like an idiot too?

  1. Us Country Bumpkins didn't get access to Eurovision. Obviously we aren't trendy enough to warrant it.

Thumbs up on Tricky's t-shirt. Good job!

  2. Looks like great fun. I wish I could wing an invite to Casa de Glow and join in the fun. I had a crazy weekend and by the time I realise Eurovision was on, it was over. :-(

I did get some crazy costume, not-sure-they-are-right-in-the-head entertainment though by going to the starting point for the Variety Children's Charity Bash/Car Rally. Cavement, a Scooby Doo Mystery Machine entrant, Where's Wally, the Stig, Bob the Builder - all that and more with a whole lot of grown-ups dressed up and driving old cars around NSW for the next week to visit children at disadvantaged and special schools in remote areas.

  4. ooooh I love Eurovision. It's so crappy it's good! I have to say I'm glad Jedward didn't win they were extremely irritating to watch.

  6.  A. You're a babe.B. My eyes will never recover from the year Jordan wore that pink jumpsuit while nine months pregnant. Not sure I can ever watch again...

  8. You crack me up! Do you seriously have Eurovision Parties??? LOL... Last night was actually one of those extremely rare nights, when I had the chance to click through the remote control. I saw those identical twins in mini-skirts singing (where were they from, again?).

  10. I love the Variety Bash cars - I should do it one year because it would mean I could be in fancy dress for aaaages!

  12. That bloody Jedward song has been stuck in my head since the semi final. They won the Australian vote!

  13. It's an excuse to drink copious amounts of wine and eat European food - it's brilliant :)

  14. *shudder* That was kinda like a car crash, couldn't look away but you knew it would be bad to see.

  15. We have one every year! I can't believe those twins didn't get in the final and yet the annoying Jedward twins did!

  17. I haven't seen Eurovision since ABBA were on it. I just seem to keep missing it.

  18. The crazier the better - when they look like professional I'm not really interested :P

  19. I find it hard to make myself sit and watch anything lengthy on tele these days. I'm more of a 'check out the pics and highlights' the next day sort of person - even did that with the royal wedding, I'm ashamed to admit. Loved your costume though! And how do you get that winged eye thing to work? (I always look as though I've emptied an entire tube of liner on myself and madly scrub it all back off.)

  20.  Aww Tricky looks so cute! We joined our neighbour for his Eurovision party, I had to dress up as France so I wore a bateau top but couldn't find one of those hats, I wore a suitably haughty look to compensate...

My neighbour told me that at school they had to memorise the words to J'aime La Vie because it was the one and only song Belgium has won for Eurovision.

I thought the presenter from the BBC was nasty, so rude! I hope they have a different commentator next year because I'm hooked!

  21. I'm a makeup artist, Emma, so I've had a bit of practice with the winged look - though getting them even is still a constant battle, even with all the experience I've had! Go from cute flick to Amy Winehouse Wanna-be with one slip!

  22. We used to get the BBC coverage until Terry Wogan left, his catty comments were awesome. I think it's Graham Norton now who does it and I haven't heard him because we have Australian commentators now (Julia Zemiro and Sam Pang). I imagine he'd be pretty ruthless.

  23. bonkers - absolute bonkers.        Can't help but watch it, every year.   Keep meaning to dress up but never quite drunk enough.    Might try and get the family to dress up as Bucks Fizz next year - We will have to draw lots to see who gets to be the other girl...

  25.  Totally missed out on a real jam session. It's for the best though, I sing entirely too loudly. And I have a tendency to lick the screen whenever Sweden performs. to lick the screen whenever Sweden performs.

  26. Oh I've been addicted forever, but it has been a guilty secret and it is only since I have been on Facebook the last few years that I have discovered that I have lots of friends the same.  I am definitely going to have a party next year!

Two of my Europe based friends actually went this year, one even left Copenhagen without any guarantee she could legally re-enter ( and rejoin her kids and husband!) due to a hold up on visa renewals in Denmark.  That's dedicated!

    I love the Moldova hat!

  27. You, Map Guy and your friends are hilarious!  I love your predilection towards dressing up to celebrate fun TV.   Now, Eurovision is not on here in Canada but it apprears that we are totally missing out.

    I love Tricky's lederhosen!
